Talking the Blues Podcast, reflections on Brighton (a) and a belated tribute to one of the greats, Denis Law RIP

Welcome to this week’s Talking the Blues Podcast with George and Andy Costigan. Perhaps a first, but we stick solely to footballing matters as Everton produce an archetypical, classic Moyes performance away at Brighton & Hove Albion.

We reflect also on the recent passing of one of football’s greatest, Denis Law

The Talking the Blues Podcast is available, as always, free of charge and advertising on all major podcast platforms, links to which can be found here

As ever thanks for listening – or reading, the written transcript will be available Monday morning GMT

  1. MOYSEYTIME
I think Moyes has returned and is now relishing the idea that he is, in his own little way, the Fergy of the league. The oldest serving PL manager, much wiser for his experiences and with a deep and sometimes evident love of the club. He has confessed he should have returned to Everton on no less than three occasions since his first departure and his evident pleasure of being here is coming through in all sorts of ways.
His pre and post match pressers, his presence on the touchline and his response to the players after the BHA game were there for everybody to see.

I was initially rejected from the ballot for the first test event but further tickets were then made available and I was then successful. Seats have been allocated and I will be in the South East corner. The virtual view of the new stadium from this section looks tremendous.
I will ensure you hear all about the experience Paul!

  2. Never in my life have I ever heard such Moyes rose tinted bull. We were awful on Saturday and extremely lucky to come away with 3 points. Effort yes, stoute defending yes but passing, movement, clear cut chances??

Stats shots off target Brighton 15 everton 2 on target Brighton 1 everton 0. Pen separate. Possession Brighton 69% everton 31. Corners Brighton 9 everton 1.

This was as one sided as they come. Had Brighton been accurate in front of goal they’d have won easily.

Yes we have changed for the better. But please stop exaggerating what Moyes has achieved and done. Time will tell if his 2nd tenure is a success.

    • Hi James, I would respectfully disagree with you. We lost our main No.09 after 10 mins when Moyes would have been relying on him. He simply hasn’t had time to focus attacking patterns of play on Beto alone and despite his historical injuries, DCL has looked physically reliable in recent months.

DCL & BETO are two utterly different attackers so a change so early on denied the plan, upset the play and left us with the only fit striker – BETO (with the issues described above) filling in. The lad tries his best but he isn’t up to it.

The stats you quote might equally suggest that BHA were woeful in front of goal – that’s easy to overlook and being accurate on target doesn’t directly relate to goals – does it?
The fact that Pickford had so little to do suggests our defensive setup (including O’Brien – Moyes choice), worked extremely well. So that is down to Moyes. And then we had 10 men with 15+ mins to play. Moyes would have been tweaking and adapting to that – Dyche would have been talking to Stoney and Woaney through his hand!

Look, we all have an opinion, so I don’t think (based on recent history and this fixture last season when Dunk scored an equalizer in the 94th minute), EFC get 3 points with Dyche in charge. In our current state – that is down to Moyes. So whilst I don’t think anybody’s blowing smoke up his backside, he has already had a very positive effect on the players (look at O’Brien’s comments in the Liverpool Echo), the fans and the club in general. If Moyes gets near his career points average of nearly 1.5 per game, we will be safe and in a decent position with games to spare. His average finishing position in the PL is 9th. So far, so good.

There is no harm in being positive, we’ve been totally denied positivity by an utterly negative Dyche, who had us in a relegation fight from Day 1 of 24/25, tried to kill any enthusiasm the fanbase had for our last season at Goodison and never once paid more than lip service to the club or its fans.

To misquote Monty Python “ he’s not the Messiah, he’s just a very good boy”.

      Regards

      Keith

      • You obviously missed my positive points Keith. I state that we have changed for the better and highlight the good defensive work. But after such heavy criticism of Dyche for this kind of performance to suddenly laud it as a Moyes masterclass really is over the top. Brighton fans were rightly annoyed at the result, as well as their teams’ lack of precision in front of goal. They were a level above us in most departments. The ‘masterclass’ included leaving us with 10 men for 20 minutes. Something that could have been avoided with better substitution decisions. I am over the moon with 2 wins, but I am also a realist. This wild swing in supporter views is one of the big problems the game faces today. People who have a platform express strong opinions, and their followers happily row in. Moyes history is there to be analysed as was Dyches. Yes he’s a better manager but he most definitely isn’t the messiah!
