D C-L has never been a natural goal scorer and never will be but the side performs better with him in it. The current problem is he’s now failing to hold the ball up and bring other players into the game. Perhaps the way Dyche has the side set up may explain why Maupay, who couldn’t even sniff a goal for us, has now scored more this season than D C-L and Beto combined!
I think Godfrey was the correct choice for right back. Coleman would have been skinned for pace by their winger and I share Dyche’s reservations about Patterson’s ability as a defender.
City got out of jail courtesy of a disputed corner, followed by a ping pong around the area which finally fell to Haarland who hit it superbly. I must say I wouldn’t argue with the three Everton academy youth coaches who had Haarland at Finch Farm but reckoned he wasn’t worth the asking price of £60k. He’s probably worth a shade more than that!!
That was very downbeat. Yes, it’s the third relation battle on the bounce (& if that is all the future holds, then that would grim), but Dyche has done a great job, we have a proper team – even though some individuals may not be the best/out of form, or both – and are definitely moving in the right direction. Cheer up, you old buggers (from another old bugger)!
City scored, and their fans started leaving; City scored, and Everton fans switched off. That’s the state of it.
We (and Andy and George) need to stop pussyfooting around regarding DCL. Have said for many years, including before Ancelotti, he’s simply not good enough. He can’t hold up the ball, he can’t control a ball, he can’t pass a ball, he has no power in his shot, he’s not instinctive. And he doesn’t score goals consistently. I’m not even convinced he’s hungry enough to do any of the above. But, typically Everton, we make excuses, hope he’ll come good and wish it was better. This has been Everton’s problem for so many years. While ruthless, winning clubs discard players who don’t perform, we put up with poor quality players and hope things will get better for them and us.
