What happened

Apollo Global Management agreed to take a minority equity stake in Mubadala Capital, the alternative asset management arm of Abu Dhabi’s sovereign investor Mubadala Investment Company, and to commit capital across its strategies. Apollo and other, unnamed strategic investors are expected to commit $5bn in aggregate at initial close. Price and stake size were not disclosed; CNBC reported nearly 10%. Completion is expected in Q4 2026 (Apollo IR).

Football exposure

  • Apollo is a lender across European football and, through Apollo Sports Capital, majority owner of Atlético de Madrid since March 2026.
  • Mubadala’s chairman and group chief executive are, respectively, the owner and chairman of Manchester City. Mubadala Capital itself does not own City.
  • TWG Global, whose principal Mark Walter is a Chelsea co-owner, announced a stake in Mubadala Capital in April 2025 that the FT reports was never completed.

Why it matters

Apollo fills the equity seat TWG was announced into. Bloomberg has reported that the TWG–Mubadala deal was an early focus of the federal investigation into Walter’s businesses; no charges have been brought, and TWG says it is cooperating. Apollo was already in the capital structure of the Mubadala Capital/TWG buyout of Clear Channel Outdoor, completed on 14 October 2026. The result is a denser web of connected roles, lender, co-investor and shareholder, across one of the largest pools of capital adjacent to football.

Open questions

  • Who are the other investors, and how is the $5bn split?
  • Why did the TWG stake not complete?
  • Does Apollo’s stake extend to Mubadala Capital’s holdings in Fortress and CI Financial?
